Diabetic Foot Exams & Limb Salvage
Dr. Shari L. Kaminsky is an expert at diabetic foot care and limb-salvage techniques. Foot problems and complications are common in diabetics due to nerve damage and peripheral neuropathy. Diabetes is a major cause of amputations due to decreased healing capabilities and increased infections. Diabetic foot care is extremely important as soon as diabetes is diagnosed.
The lack of feeling caused by peripheral neuropathy allows a patient to obtain small wounds and cuts on their feet without knowing. Unknown wounds will progress to ulcers and develop infections. If left untreated too long, a partial or full amputation may be necessary. The smallest ulcers should be assessed immediately by your podiatrist.
Nerve damage can also lead to bone weakness. Bone weakness can lead to foot deformities and fractures, known as Charcot Foot.
Diabetic patients are commonly treated with orthotics to prevent ulcers and infections. When complications such as Charcot foot present themselves, limb-saving surgery can be offered in an effort to prevent progression to amputation. Bone reconstruction, tendon transfer, soft tissue reconstruction, and external fixation make up possible components of limb-saving surgery.
