Diabetic Shoes

Diabetic patients are at high risk of dangerous foot conditions. The smallest wound or callus on the foot can lead to infection or even amputation.

Nerve damage and peripheral neuropathy prevent a diabetic patient from feeling pain in the lower legs and feet and can lead the patient to miss small injuries that need to be treated immediately. Diabetics are also at a higher risk for peripheral arterial disease (PAD) which causes decreased blood flow to the lower extremities which impairs healing of wounds.

Careful foot care is imperative for all diabetic patients. Once diagnosed with diabetes, the patient should never walk around barefoot, even in their own home. Shoes of some kind should be worn at all times to prevent the smallest of injuries to the skin on the foot. Ideally, the shoes should also be diabetic footwear for several reasons.

• Reduce excessive pressure on the foot

• Better fit to stop rubbing

• Stabilization and support especially when foot deformities are present (hammertoes or Charcot)

• Limit foot and toe joint motion
