Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis interferes with the ability to walk. The pain is excruciating. Plantar fasciitis pain occurs when the plantar fascia (a band of tissue that extends from the toes to the heel) becomes inflamed. Patients with high arches or flat feet are more prone to developing plantar fasciitis, but it can develop in anyone.

Plantar fasciitis pain is more severe first thing in the morning or after sitting for long periods of time. Constant standing and walking can aggravate the symptoms. This condition can often be confused with other foot conditions. Dr. Shari L. Kaminsky can provide the correct diagnosis and offer effective treatment for pain relief.

Fortunately, plantar fasciitis treatment is usually effective, although it does take time. Depending on what works for each patient, treatment consists of a combination of:

• Rest

• Foot stretching exercises

• Ice therapy

• Shoe inserts

• Anti-inflammatory medications

• Night splints

• Possible supportive taping

• Steroid injections

If those treatments are not successful, other measures could be used:

• Casting or use of a walking boot

• Surgery to release the fascia

Once the plantar fasciitis is relieved, preventative measures should be taken to keep the inflammation from returning. Supportive shoes or shoe inserts, continued stretching exercises, and weight control are effective in plantar fasciitis prevention.
