Tendinitis

Tendons are present all over the body. They are the thick cords that connect muscles to bones. There are three major tendons in the foot and ankle that are susceptible to tendinitis (inflammation):

• Achilles tendon

• Posterior tibial tendon

• Peroneal tendon

Tendinitis is typically caused by injury, overuse, or incorrect biomechanics with physical activity. Arthritis and flat feet can also cause tendinitis.

Tendinitis pain is more intense when the tendon involved moves or is stretched. Initial treatment is rest and ice. Apply ice to the foot three to four times per day for 15 minutes at a time. Stay off the foot to relieve the pressure. If the pain lasts more than one week, it is time to see Dr. Shari L. Kaminsky. Chronic tendinitis will not heal by itself, and the longer it is untreated, the harder it will be to heal it.

Tendinitis treatment is designed for reducing inflammation and relieving pain. After the tendon has healed, preventing recurring inflammation is critical. Dr. Kaminsky will provide techniques to avoid future tendinitis.
